History: MBI was founded in 1984 by Garland J. Hopkins, Jr. Mr. Hopkins was a graduate of the University of Virginia and the former president of G.J. Hopkins Inc., a mechanical and electrical contracting firm, which he operated for 25 years. Upon his passing in 1989, ownership was transferred to his wife, Judy Hopkins.
Robert D. Hockett joined Mechanical Balancing in June, 1989. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1971 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia (No. 7749). He has over 35 years of experience in the design of HVAC systems and was the former department head of Mechanical Engineering with Smithey & Boynton. He became a NEBB certified supervisor in August 1990. Mr. Hockett is currently President of Mechanical Balancing.

Mechanical Balancing employs nine full time technicians who have experience with a variety of HVAC systems, including water source heat pumps, variable air volume, fan powered variable volume, fan coil units, packaged equipment, hot water, chilled water, kitchen hoods, laboratory hoods and operating rooms.
